My impression of the boy (a.k.a The Loner) is that he is very pessimistic. Though I think that the boy just wants to be accepted by the children, this can be inferred as the boy goes out to the playground every recess to watch people play, but he himself just leans against the wall and does “boredom beating tricks” like “smacks his hands against the bricks”, “traces patterns with his feet” and “scuffs to make the tarmac squeak”. All these shows that he is very bored of waiting for others to talk to him. He did not take initiative to go and talk to the children and ask if he could join, he thinks that the others are going to reject him even before he asked. Thus, I think he is very pessimistic.

My impressions of the children are that they are not friendly and initiative, as none of them went up to talk to the boy. They also had no thoughts of accepting the boy into their clique. They also whisper when they walk past him, maybe they were gossiping about him, about how he has no friends and whatsoever. Sometimes, they “pass by him and never speaks”, meaning that they don’t wish to share their thoughts with him. But, from “and neither he nor we will yield”, I think that they are waiting for the boy to cave in to them and ask first, which is not going to happen anytime soon, they themselves know it best, I think that they should go up and talk to the boy, instead of just staring and laughing at him.

Write one paragraph each for why Jack and the Giant both deserve our sympathy.

Jack deserved our sympathy as he and his family was very poor. They only had one milk cow’s milk to sell and to earn money. When the cow gave no milk, they had no income for the day. When Jack offered to go out and work, his mother replied that no one would take him. So they had to sell the cow, known as Milky-White, to get money to start a shop for their living. When he sold Milky-White and got 5 magical beans, his mother instead scolded him for being stupid and foolish for exchanging the cow with five beans. She then deprived him of his supper, since Jack was out for the whole day, he had to starve. Thus I sympathise him.

The giant also deserved our sympathy as he did not deserve to die. He was just living a normal life, when the old man gave Jack the beans, Jack went up into his house and began stealing all of his possession. It is very sad to have your precious belongings stolen by a burglar. What’s more, at the end of the story, the giant was killed by Jack, when he did not even deserve to die, just getting back what was taken from him.

1. Do you sympathise with The Joker?

I do not sympathise with Joker as he harmed a lot of people for his greed and pain in his heart, even though he wasn't a criminal at first, he had a choice to choose between the good and evil. From my research of Joker, he only became what he was today because of his traumatising past. But aside from that, he could have always accepted help from other people and to live like a normal person, and not to be a criminal.

In The Dark Knight, he wanted to reveal Batman's identity by killing people of Gotham everyday, it was only done out of his hate and thirst for revenge. He wants to know Batman's real identity, but that does not give him any rights to harm innocent peoples' lives, he should think about their point of view and what he is doing currently is very alike to his father's doings.

Although, I do feel sorry for the Joker as he has a very traumatising childhood as his drunkard father abuses his mother, he also carved Joker's face into a smile after seeing his son's 'serious' look. Maybe that was why he chose to become a criminal instead of asking and seeking help from councilors or others. I do not sympathise him, but I do empathise him.

Overall, Joker is a psychotic and notorious killer. He views murder as a sport and enjoys doing it. His methods are very cruel and he will not hesitate to kill off his comrades if they are in they way or if they had fulfilled their uses. Therefore, I do not sympathise with The Joker.

2. What did you learn from this lesson?

I learnt that even though heroes are supposed to be good guys, they are still bound to commit crimes and make mistakes in their life like the villains. Also, villains are also bound to be good every once in a while.
I have also learnt to analyse the characters' personality just by their clothing and other things that they wear. Take Joker for example, he is psychotic and crazy, and the way he dresses fits exactly with his personality. But it cannot be true everytime as Batman dresses in black and yet he is considered a hero.
